Short Biography of Artist, English

My mother is the painter and writer Leonora Carrington, and my father is the phototgrapher Chiqui Weisz. My parents fled Europe during the Second World War and were received as refugees in Mexico. I was born in Mexico City on November 14, 1947, where I lived until I was 25. My parents surrounded themselves with a group of other artists which were also refugees from the Second World War. Amongst these artists were Andre Breton, Remedios Varo, Jose and Katy Horna and Benjamin Peret. Many of these artists were also natives of Mexico, such as Frieda Kahlo, Juan Soriano and Pedro Friedeberg. Important writers, such as Juan Rulfo, Octavio Paz and Carlos Fuentes also frequented our home. In this ambiance I grew up and became an artist.

My passion for drawing has accompanied me ever since I can remember, and I have been surrounded by imagery produced by the magical brushes of my mother, Leonora Carrington. I gradually perfected my drawing in pen and ink and for several years I dedicated myself exclusively to this medium. At age fourteen I had my first exhibit of drawings in the gallery of Juan de Dios Moreno. In 1969, several drawings of mine were published in the literary magazine El Rehilete, as well as in the cultural magazine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. When I was 24, I had a major exhibit of drawings and watercolors in the Israeli-Mexican Cultural Institute.

In 1971 I moved to NY City where I lived for 13 years. It is here that I got married to Wendy Weisz, my wife. Alex my first son was born in NY in 1981. My second son David, was born in Louisiana in 1985.

In 1972, I had my first exhibit of drawings in the Latin American Theater Institute in New York, organized by Ms. Joanne Potlitzer. In 1982, I exhibited 150 drawings in the Centennary College Cultural Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, which was the opening exhibit of this cultural center. In 1989, I showed 20 drawings in pen and ink in the Venzor Gallery in Chicago. In 1996, I showed 170 drawings and watercolors at the Harlequin Gallery in Mexico City. In May, 1996, I showed three paintings along with other major Latin American Artists at the Brewster Arts Gallery in New York.
